2021 A Year in review

Hey there & welcome back to the blog! Today as so many of us get ready to close the chapter to 2021, it’s only natural that I find myself taking a long look at the year and celebrating the “wins”. Before I get into all things business, I just HAVE to say by far one of the best wins I’ve had this year is becoming a mom and watching my husband become a father.  I find myself teary just writing it because even after 7 months it still seems so surreal to love these two so deeply. With so much rain we welcomed our sweet rainbow baby in June and life has never ever been sweeter.

Popped with Phebe grew so much this year through mentoring, education, and I was able to be apart of so many wonderful conversations. I dreamed deeply that I could grow my love & passion for creating diversified income through floral pop-up shop events for my fellow floral designers and goodness were you listening!

Interview with NHPR -April 2021

This interview touched on how Covid has directly impacted the floral industry. I think I speak for all of us when I say I wondered if there would be enough flowers for all of us with two wedding seasons crammed into one. It was an uncertain time and I still shudder when I think of white roses (lol, no really!). This was also the first time I felt like my business & educational world were connecting in a way I hadn’t anticipated, it was so much easier to explain to clients why these shortages were happening by sharing this article amongst many others. 2021 was a year of setting new expectations and I grew so much as a designer. My motto is “profit over pretty”, and I make no qualms about wanting pro’s to be profitable in their floral journey. I’m not just talking this talk, I am out there with you creating events, running my own floral business; Grace Floral and Co, and inspiring you to keep creating! 

This is the time of year where my inbox, dm’s, and facebook group page begin to flutter with questions from florists about one of my favorite topics, pop-up shops. The biggest question I get whether it’s from a studio, home based, beginner, or even farmer florist is ……

How to decorate your christmas tree

Ahhhh it’s my FAVORITE time of year and if you’ve been following me on instagram (shameless plug, follow me!) you’ve noticed I’ve had my Christmas tree up since the beginning of November. First things first, I have been drooling over my very own King of Christmas tree and I finally had an opportunity to get one this year! My King of Christmas tree is the 7” flocked Prince tree, if you love mine run don’t walk to get yours here. I’m a southern girl so having a flocked tree has been on my list of must haves for a while. I love it so much that I’m loosely contemplating keeping it up until the middle of January just so that I don’t have to pack all the holiday cheer away after the holidays. If you’re new to decorating your tree or you are dreaming of having a pinterest worthy tree you’ll want to follow my really easy 5 tree decorating tips.

1.) Purchase a King of Christmas tree! I loved how easy the setup was! Literally three pieces to put together and that’s it. As a kid I remember having a million pieces to put together and fluffing every individual stem. Goodness I just don’t know how my mom did ALLLL that work every year (haha, sorry mom!), but I am certainly not about that life (lol). I’m also wildly impatient and I’m usually really excited to start a project and finish it before my husband gets home.

2.) Lights, Lights, Baby. Ok this tip is key especially if you are not buying a pre-lit tree. When you add your lights make sure you start from the inside and coming all the way out to the tip of the branch and then back all the way to the inside of the tree. Your goal is to create depth, depth equals TWINKLE. You’ll want to avoid stringing all of your lights in a circle along the edge of your tree.

3.) GO BIG. It’s now time for the ornaments. If you’re like me (a titch OCD) you’ll have your ornaments sorted by size. I like to start with my extra large glass ornaments toward the inside and I usually add these into my tree to create visual depth. I typically wire these into my tree due to the weight of my glass ornaments, if they are shatterproof this may not be necessary. I also load up on buying my ornaments at the end of the holiday season just so that I’m ahead of the holiday for next year. Did I mention a titch OCD haha.

4.) This year I decided to do something new, and that was adding a thin fabric garland. I started at the top and decided to loosely drape the garland around my tree at an angle. This year this was one of my favorite details and you can find this at most home decorating stores like Marshalls, Homegoods, or Hobby Lobby.

5.) I keep adding ornaments based on size scattering in a triangular pattern (I know this sounds crazy lol, but TRUST ME). Keep adding, and even when you think you have enough KEEP GOING you can never really have enough ornaments. Don’t forget to wire ornaments that are heavier.

One of the things I do while decorating is I continue to step back often when I’m designing my tree to see if there are any holes or gaps that I didn’t notice. I also invested in 90% glass ornaments because I think they add more twinkle against the Christmas lights than shatterproof do, however that’s totally a personal preference but do you boo! I do also have a few fabric ornaments that just give me all the feels.

Things to keep in mind: Size, Shape, Texture. Ok so here’s the real secret, having a variety of different shapes, sizes, and textures will make your tree more visually interesting. YOU WANT visual interest, otherwise you may end up with a tree you don’t absolutely love. Please keep all of those things in mind as you begin, continue, or shop early for your holiday tree! At the end of the day have fun with this, use anything that works for you but feel free to make your own rules.

The first Pop-Up floral shop I ever created was because I felt stuck. As a home based floral designer at the time and someone who only did weddings and events I wasn’t maximizing my exposure to new potential clientele. So I had the brilliant idea to build a marketing event around a flower holiday.
